KELOIDS AND HOW TO PROTECT YOUR PIERCING
Welcome to the MADAJ Piercings blog! Today, we are addressing an important topic for all piercing enthusiasts: keloids. These small skin formations can be a source of concern, but with the right information and care, they can be effectively managed.
What is a keloid?
A keloid is an excessive growth of scar tissue at the site of a skin injury, which in the case of our clients, is often the result of a new piercing. Keloids develop when the body continues to produce collagen after the wound has healed, forming a raised and often hard mass. Keloids do not appear immediately after piercing but often several months later. This visible and easily recognizable growth often comes with itching and/or pain.
Why does a keloid develop?
Keloids form when the skin's healing process is disrupted and becomes hyperactive. Although the exact cause is still unknown, certain factors such as genetics, skin type, and the location of the piercing can influence their development.
Here are some factors that promote the appearance of a keloid:
- Daily aggression: Every day, your piercing faces multiple aggressions: playing with your piercing, snagging it while styling your hair or with your clothes, represent repeated trauma and irritate the pierced area. In defense, the skin tends to produce a large amount of scar tissue, which will promote the development of the keloid.
- Poor piercing practice: It is imperative to ensure that your piercer is experienced and adheres to the necessary hygiene rules to avoid any complications. Do not hesitate to compare piercing salons and read their reviews to make the right choice before getting started. Once you've chosen your piercer, stay vigilant that all the equipment used is single-use and sterilized to standards. The professional must wear gloves throughout the service.
- Sleep: Lying down and pressing on the newly pierced ear can exert continuous pressure on this new sensitive area. This pressure can not only prolong the healing time but also increase the chances of forming keloids and other complications.
- Allergic reactions: A reaction to your piercing may indicate an allergy to the metals used, such as nickel. To avoid this, it is essential to choose jewelry made from hypoallergenic materials, such as 14 and 18-carat gold or ASTM-F136 titanium.
- Infections: Insufficient hygiene of the piercing site or the use of an impure piece of jewelry can introduce bacteria and lead to an infection. Poorly treated infections are likely to promote the development of keloids.
- Genetic factors: If keloids have been observed in other family members, you may be more predisposed to develop them. It is therefore crucial to be extra careful and meticulously care for any new piercing.
How to recognize a keloid?
A keloid typically appears as a reddish or flesh-colored, hard, and bumpy growth around the piercing site. Unlike a hypertrophic scar, a keloid may continue to grow well after the initial healing of the wound.
How to prevent and avoid the appearance of a keloid?
The choice of metal is crucial to prevent adverse reactions. At MADAJ Piercings, we recommend the use of 18-carat gold jewelry, a premium and hypoallergenic metal, to minimize the risk of reactions and promote healthy healing.

Ensuring good healing of your piercing
For optimal healing, it is essential to follow the care instructions provided by your piercer. This includes regular cleaning of the piercing with a saline solution and maintaining good general hygiene. Avoid handling the piercing with dirty hands and covering it with tight clothing.
